Spock (Leonard Nimoy) waxes spooky as Death personified in this video retelling of Ray Bradbury's classic Halloween adventure. A Hanna-Barbera animated presentation, The Halloween Tree tells the story of four close friends who must face their greatest fears as they travel through time to save their dear comrade, Pip. It's Halloween night, Pip's favorite holiday, and the friends are baffled to spot his spirit running through the woods when they've just seen his body hauled off in an ambulance. Mustering their courage, they follow the spirit and meet Moundshroud (Nimoy), the mysterious black-caped proprietor of a haunted house. Moundshroud challenges them each to gain a deeper understanding of the origins of this ghostly holiday as he leads them on an educational journey through faraway places and time periods. From Egyptian sarcophaguses to Mexican graveyards, the children learn the legends behind Halloween and the importance they place on their friendship with Pip. Imaginative, not too scary, well-acted, and nicely drawn, this hour-long treat will appeal to little spooks ages 5 and older. A short Yogi Bear "classic" involving a witch vacationing in Jellystone Park opens the show; parents not into reminiscing might wish to fast-forward past this dated time-waster. --Liane Thomas

Ranks among the best!

This movie encapsulates the experience of Halloween! Watch it. Be skeptical. Be critical of it. But be sure to watch the whole thing. You will want to see it every Halloween! We can't be kids forever and we lose a lot of what makes holidays magical as we grow up. But this film can take you back for a while.

I wish this movie was available on DVD.

The Halloween Tree

This is one of the best animated movies of it's kind that I have ever seen! I loved this movie the very first time I saw it on TV several years ago! I waited and waited to see if it would be shown on TV since the last time I saw some of it, but it never came back on as far as I know, so this had to be a (must find movie for me). It seemed as if I never would be able to find this movie anywhere but with God's help I did. I like the animation and the storyline and narriation by Ray Bradbury. I gave this movie 5 Stars because it is an awesome movie! I like movies of this kind so this movie is just the right one for me.I like the feeling of Halloween it gives me, I can reminess about when I was little and growing up when I saw this movie. I recommend this movie to everyone and hope those who have this movie will continue to enjoy it for many years and for those who don't have this movie purchase a copy whereever you can as soon as possible!

very entertaining, spooky

First let me warn you, this is a little too spooky for kids 7 and under. The film is base on a story by Ray Bradbury and he narrates the movie. The movie is very different than the book, but than what movie isn't? The scary "Moundshroud" character keeps you guessing as to whether his intents are good or evil. He is wonderfully voiced by Leonard Nimoy, and if you have never heard him voice animated films, not only is he really good but you can't tell it is him!

In the story 4 kids,(3 boys and 1 girl) are preparing for Halloween night and find that their buddy Pippin is being taken away in an ambulance. His spirit has been taken by ghosts of Halloween past and must be returned to its body. Each of the kids is dressed as a classic Haloween character and they must travel in time to discover the origen of that costume and the meaning of Halloween. For example the mummy leads them to ancient Egypt an pyramid secrets. The skeleton takes them to Mexico for Day of the dead celebrations. They also learn what real friendship means and give a huge personal sacrifice to save the soul of their friend.

This movie is bigger than it seems, and my 40 year old wife has watched this tape about 6 times. The movie will keep you guessing until the end. Suspenseful, imaginative, and educational without trying to be.

Halloween tradition

This movie is a classic! It's a tradition in my family to watch this wonderful movie every year around Halloween. If you have never seen this movie, or are thinking about buying it, watch it and buy it! With brilliant characters, and a pile of wits, this movie makes you chill and makes your imagination soar! A must have for any video collector!

OK, but...

There is no comparison between this film and the book. The original story and prose of the book is lost in this translation to film. It seems this film is aimed at a younger audience than the original book
